Who we are

Minerva was established in Canberra in 1988 by a group of women who discovered that they shared a love of reading and talking about books. We have been going strong ever since, with several original members still in attendance.

At any given time we number 10 to 12 members, and have one main rule: once a member, always a member.

We meet monthly throughout the year, with our December meeting being a Christmas get together. We are serious about reading and discussing books, and dedicate approximately one hour each meeting for discussion. We hope members read the set book, but regardless, spoilers are allowed during discussion. We choose our books by consensus twice a year.

We are also a social bunch, so we allow time before and after book discussion for socialising too! Reading and supporting each other through our life’s journey go hand in hand.

Our name Minerva refers to the Roman Goddess of Wisdom, and was inspired by the school song of one of the founding members.
